What was the Cold War? (4 key points)
1) it was a state of tension between the west (USA) and the east (Soviet Union)
2) it was ideological conflict between capitalism and communism
3) there was no direct conflict between the two sides
4) it began after WW2 and ended in 1991
What kind of state was the USSR?
Communist state
Why was the rights of an individual tightly controlled? (USSR)
Because the rights of individuals were seen as less important than the good society as a whole
What did soviet leaders believe about the way other countries were led? (USSR)
They believed that other countries should be led in the communist way
What were many people in the USSR bitterly opposed to?
Capitalism
Elections were held but what did all candidates belong to? (USSR)
The communist party
What kind of party was the USSR?
One party dictatorship
Industry’s grew rapidly in the 1920s/30s however what was the general standard of living low or high compared to the USA? (USSR)
Much lower
Under its political system what was rare? (USSR)
Unemployment was rare and extreme poverty was rarer
What was the USA?
A democracy, its government was chosen in free elections
What kind of state was the USA?
Capitalist state, it was the worlds wealthiest country
What were there extremes of in the USA?
Great wealth and great poverty
What were many Americans bitterly opposed to and what were they alarmed by?
Communism and they were alarmed of the communist theory which talked of spreading revolution
What did Americans strongly believe about the way other countries should be run?
In the same way as America
What was more important to Americans than everyone being equal?
Having freedom and being able to speak your mind
