Explain what happened in Greece from 1944 - 1947?
- Greece is not communist in the begging
- Germans retreated from Greece in 1944 and there were to rival groups
1) communist - wanted Greece to be soviet republic
2) monarchists - wanted the return of the king - so Churchill sent British troops to help/supervise elections but in reality= king restored
- the USSR protested and the communist used force to take control
- civil war
- February 1947 Churchill withdrew British troops

After the British had withdrew their troops in 1947
What did Truman do?
He sent troops to replace the British he tried to prop up the kings government
Was Truman successful in preventing a communist take over in Greece?
Yes because even though the government was weak it was also a royalist

American intervention in Greece marked a new era in the USA’s attitude toward world politics - this was known as the “Truman doctrine”
What was containment?
Truman excepted the fact that Eastern Europe was now communist but his aim was to stop communism from spreading any further. This policy became known as containment
When general George Marshall busted Europe what did he find?
A ruined economy
- the countries of Europe owed $11.5 billion to the USA
- there were extreme shortages in goods and most countries were still rationing bread

It was not until there was a communist cut down in Czechoslovakia before congress changed their minds and passed it

Stalin viewed the Marshall plan with suspicion. After expressing some initial interest he refused to have anything more to do with it
