General Batista - Americans were supportive of his regime and gave him lots of money because he was just as anti communist as they were.

His rule was corrupt and unpopular.

There was plenty of opposition to Batista in Cuba itself. In 1959 Castro overthrew Batista

He quickly killed, arrested or exiled many political components - he was Ruthless but popular

1) they were taken by surprise at first but decided to recognise Castro was now in the leader
2) however within a short period of time relations between the two countries grew worse.
