Describe the police force in Whitechapel.
The police force had insufficient manpower the met was made up by 13,319 men but only 1,383 were available for duty.
Explain the overcrowding in Whitechapel.
The majority of the houses were overcrowded. There could be 30 people in one apartment.
There was around 30,000 people and around 4,000 occupied houses.
What was the Peabody Estate?
The Peabody estate was a living space for the poor. It opened in 1881 and provided around 300 flats. weekly rents were reasonable, 3 shillings.
What was work like in White chape?
Sweat shops were common. They were small cramped and workers worked 20 hours a day and slept on site.
Work wasn’t always available.
Who were the Fenians?
They were Irish nationalists who demanded freedom rule by the UK.
They were seen as a terrorist movement.
Describe the Immigration of Jews in Whitechapel.
The Jewish settlers were resented by the local population
By 1888 the Jewish population of parts of Whitechapel had grown to 95%.

By 1888 there was a high unemployment rate and housing shortages. This lead to High tensions Amongst the immigrants and The locals.

What was the Vigilance Committee?
A group of vigilante’s hired by businessmen to catch jack the ripper. This was set up in 1888.

This was a party created to represent agricultural and industrial labourers, and the rights of women
What were the attitudes towards the H division like in Whitechapel?
Police were seen as a negative light and attacks by violent Gangs were common
