who was the KKK and when were they founded?
the Ku Klux Klan was established in Tennessee in 1866 after then end of slavery in America and were racist group who dressed in all white robes with pointy masks,
when did the KKK revive?
1915 - gaining millions of followers across America
what key event encouraged the KKK to become more known?
the Brown rulling and the Montgomery bus boycott, after buses were desegregated the KKK drove through a black neighbourhood ( 40 car loads ) - black reacted by waving
actions of the KKK?
- bombing King’s house in 1956 and his motel in the Birmingham campaign 1963
- attacks on the Freedom riders in 1963
- cross burnings
- beatings
- lynching
the last three occured in Mississippi during the winter of 1963-64
who was the white citezens council?
established in Mississippi 1954 after the brown rulling
- inspired people in Louisianna, Mississippi and South Carolina to establish other citizen councils and they kept in touch
when did membership for the WCC peak?
1956 - 250,000 memebers mostly doctors and businessmen ( the pillars of society )
what did the WCC do?
- they sponsored white schools
- and produced racial propaganda including childrens books that talked about “segregated heaven”
what other racist group did the WCC differentiate themselves from
- KKK who were considered a lower class and associated with violence
- however some were members of both including Byron De La Beckwith who in 1963 assassinated NAACP activist Medgar Evers.
