White matter Flashcards
What are the three types of white matter?
Commissural fibres,
association fibres and projection fibres.
What are names of the four types of commissural fibres?
Blue: Corpus callosum,
Purple: Anterior commissural,
Teal: Posterior commissural, &
Green: Hippocampal commissural fibres
Label the four regions of the corpus callosum (1-4).
- Genu
- Rostrum
- Body
- Splenium

What does the anterior commissure primarily connect?
The temporal lobes are connected by the the anterior commissure.
Some fibres to the olfactory centres also travel here.
Label the attached image.
A Corpus callosum,
B. Posterior commissure
C. Hippocampal commissure, &
D. Anterior commissure.
What regions of the brain does the commissural fibres connect?
List the main association Fibres
- Superior longditudinal fasiculus
- Fronto-occipital fasciculus
- Uncinate fasciculus
- Arcuate fasiculus
- Cingulum bundle
What regions of the brain does the superior longitudinal fasciculus connect.
Frontal, temporal and occipital lobes.
What regions of the brain does the fronto-occipital fasiculus connect?
The fronto-occipital fasiculus is a deep structure which connects the frontal and temporal lobes to the occipital lobes. It runs just lateral to the caudate nucleus.
What regions of the brain does the uncinate fasciculus connect?
The uncinate fasciculus connects the inferior portion of the frontal lobe and the superior anterior portion of the temporal lobe. It traverses the bottom of the lateral fissure.
What region of the brain does the arcuate fasciculus connect?
The arcuate fasciculus connects Brocas area (Frontal lobe - ) to Wernikies area (Temoral lobe - superior region of the superior temporal gyrus) there for connecting speech production and speech comprehension regions respectively.
What region of the brain does the arcuate fasciculus connect?
The arcuate fasciculus connects Brocas area (Frontal lobe - posterior aspect of the inferior frontal gyrus) to Wernikies area (Temporal lobe - superior region of the superior temporal gyrus) there for connecting speech production and speech comprehension regions.
What regions of the brain does the cingulate fasciculus connect?
Frontal and parietal lobes > the para-hippocampal & temporal lobes.
What regions of the brain does the inferior longitudinal fasciculus connect?
The temporal and occipital lobes are connected by the inferior longitudinal fasciculus. It runs below the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle.
