Q

Where do tropical storms form?

A

In the Tropics - to the North and South of the Equator. No tropical storms at the Equator.
- Only form over warm oceans (above 27 degrees)
- Form in Summer and Autumn
- 5-15 degrees North and South of the equator where the coriolis effect is high. Equator has 0 spin
- Intense heat makes air unstable causing it to rise rapidly

Q

How does the Global atmospheric circulation affect tropical storms?

A
  • Unstable rising air in equatorial regions (where Hadley cells join together) provides ideal conditions as the air rises and condenses causing storm clouds to form
  • Trade winds are responsible for most of the east-west storms. Winds caused by air flowing over Earth’s surface form sub-tropical high-pressure belts to the equatorial low-pressure belts
