Hurricane watch - wide spread area, lets people know that hurricane conditions could be possible.
Hurricane warning - specific area, lets people know that hurricane conditions are expected and people should take action

A
- Windows, doors and roofs strengthened to withstand strong winds (eg shutters)
- Constructed using strong materials like concrete
- Storm drains to take away access amounts of rainfall and reduce flooding
- Sea walls to protect against storm surges
- Houses near the coast are on stilts to prevent storm surge damage
- Special cyclone centres built

- Building better housing/protection structures to help reduce the damage and deaths
- Raising awareness and teaching people what to do (sometimes involves practice evacuations)
- Families advised to have a plan for themselves and escape bags with important items
