The 25th of December 1066.
What started the Harrying of the North?
After the Battle of Hastings, William made peace with the Saxon Earls Edwin and Morcar. They were given land in the North East as a reward for making peace.
However, in 1068, when William attempted to collect taxes Edwin and Morcar started a rebellion. They were supported by many Saxons and Welsh and killed hundreds of Normans at York by burning them alive!
What did William do to make the North pay their taxes?
He burned and wasted their land, burned all their farm tools, crops and animals. He also burned down their houses with everything in them.
Why did William do this to all the North and not just the rebellion?
He did it to prove a point, that he was in charge so you should do what he says.
What was the feudal system?
The feudal system was a system of trading land for men or work.

It lead to a famine in the north.
