Q

What started the Harrying of the North?

A

After the Battle of Hastings, William made peace with the Saxon Earls Edwin and Morcar. They were given land in the North East as a reward for making peace.
However, in 1068, when William attempted to collect taxes Edwin and Morcar started a rebellion. They were supported by many Saxons and Welsh and killed hundreds of Normans at York by burning them alive!
