the demands included reducing the power of bishops and the employment of ministers who parliament could trust to advise Charles.
Trigger 2:November 1641-the irish rebellion?
on 1st November, London learned of a rebellion in Ireland. the catholics had risen up against their protestant rulers. rumours spread through London: “200,000 protestants were murdered! it was the first part of the plan to make england catholic!”
trigger 3:january 1642-charles tries to arrest 5 MPs?
MPs didn’t trust him, fearing that he would get rid of parliament to rule by himself again. in january 1642, Charles burst into the House of Commons with 400 soldiers and demanded that 5 leading MPs be handed over and arrested. however the MPs had been warned and had already fled down the river thames.
trigger 4:february 1642-religious divisions?
some MPs wanted to get rid of the reforms introduced by Charles and archbishop laud. others wanted to remove bishops. others wanted to abolish the Church of England. in february 1642 parliament voted to throw bishops out of the House of Lords. moderate MPs became worried and started to think about supporting charles.
trigger 5:march 1642-arguments about the army?
england needed an army to put down the irish rebellion. the debate soon arose as to whom should lead the army as it was usually the king. however, Charles had now left London and MPs didn’t trust him as they feared he may use the army against them. the MPs wanted to control the army themselves. Charles refused. in march parliament took control of the army without Charles’ permission.
trigger 6:1st june 1642-commons go too far?
on june 1st parliament passed a set of demands called the nineteen propositions. this divided the kings supporters and opponents. charles and his supporters saw the nineteen propositions as the last straw, claiming that they would make him a ‘mere phantom king’. Charles’ supporters left London. in june parliament ordered each country to organise an army. Charles did the same. across the country people were forced to choose between king and parliament. by august each side had collected an army. 22nd august 1642 Charles raised his standard at Nottingham. the civil war had begun.
