1629-charles forced everyone to pay ‘ship money’. people were very angry, especially those who lived inland because ships didn’t protect them.
1637-charles had people’s ears cut off with blunt knifes so they wouldn’t hear bad things about Laud. king’s opponents thought that this was far too brutal + charles forced Scotland to use a new prayer book. this was a terrible mistake as there were angry mobs and riots.
1640-charles had little choice so he sacrificed laud and strafford who were both executed.
1642-he sent men to arrest 5 members of parliament but they heard of his plan and vanished before he could do so + he refused to surrender control of the army to parliament. he was called a ‘mere phantom of a king’ and the civil war began.
the origins of parliament in England go back to the year 1264 when…?
an English baron called simon de montfort, having rebelled and defeated king Henry III called a parliament to get more people on his side
