Q

Reasons for high mortality

A

War had caused pollution of air, water and soil which led to disease spreading easily
Camps were poorly maintained and often not well situated
Food was below standard and inmates often did not receive their full rations
Insufficient medical staff
Kitchener showed little interest in running the camps. He gave military matters priority over such interests
Conditions improved from November 1901 due to pressure from philanthropist like Emily Hobhouse
