What's the matter package Flashcards
What’s matter?
Everything around us/atoms that takes up space, (all states)
What are the 5 states?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Be condensates
- Plasma
What are atoms?
Single unit of stuff which are made up of sub atomic particles, (protons, neutrons, and electrons)
What are molecules?
2 or more atoms
When _____ changes state, it has to still be the same unit.
Matter
What are elements?
On periodic table/pure form in nature
What is our energy provider?
Sugar
Name the 3 sub particles, their charges, their location and their size.
- Protons (positive+center of atom)-bigger
- Electrons (negative+orbits)-smaller
- Neutrons (neutral+center of atom)-bigger
What’s the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus
What’s the atomic mass?
The average mass of the atoms in the element, (protons+neutrons)***always bigger than the atomic number
When is an ion positively charged?
When there is a loss electrons
When is an ion negatively charged?
When there is a gain in electrons
What’s an isotope?
Atoms of the same element, (same number of protons but different amount of neutrons)
What happens when the number of neutrons overpowers the number of protons?
It becomes radioactive.
What are valence electrons?
It’s the amount of electrons on the outer shell of the atom, (which determines how they will chemically react)
