Q

What is the hydrosphere, and what does it do?

A

It’s the earth’s outer layer of water, and it units water in all different states (solid, liquid and gas)

Q

What’s a water shed? (think of gravity)

A

it’s when water flows down slopes and goes from higher ground to the lower ground/basin.

Q

What is the issue about having contaminants upstream of the basin.

A

because it goes downstream and spreads everywhere.

Q

How are oceans able to regulate the climate?

A

by standardizing temperature of the earth and because of their ability to absorb heat.

16
Q

What is the purpose of thermohaline?

A

it creates ocean circulation which regulate the temperature and distributes the salts.

17
Q

What is the cryosphere, and what are they made up of?

A

it is the layer made up of frozen water on earth, and ice floes and glaciers.

18
Q

What are ice floes?

A

sheets of frozen water.

19
Q

What are glaciers?

A

compressed snow/ice on land.

20
Q

What is an iceberg?

A

broken pieces of glaciers that fell into the water.

21
Q

What are two energy resources?

A
  1. hydraulic energy

2. tidal power plants

22
Q

What’s hydraulic energy?

A

energy comes from moving water (mechanical energy becomes electrical energy)

23
Q

What are the 3 advantages of hydraulic energy?

A
  1. no pollutants (once installed)
  2. renewable
  3. inexpensive
24
Q

What are the 4 disadvantages of hydraulic energy?

A
  1. floods
  2. decrease of water downstream
  3. disrupting habitats
  4. location dependent
25
Q

What is tidal power, and what causes it?

A

tides/marine currents produce electrical energy and are caused by the earth/moon relationship.

26
Q

Why is the moon’s influence of the earth much greater than the sun?

A

because the moon is so much close than the earth.
