Materials: Constraints & Deformations Flashcards
What is a constraint?
It is a force.
What is a deformation and what are the different levels of deformation?
It is a constraint on an object
- Elastic
- Plastic
- Fracture
What are the five constraints?
- tension
- torsion
- shearing (sharp)
- compression
- deflection
Hardness?
resistance to being scratch.
Resilience?
shock resistance.
Malleability?
ability to be shaped.
Ductility?
pulled/stretched into a wire using tension.
stiffness?
ability to maintain shape.
What are plastics made from?
fossil fuels (oil and gas)
What are the building blocks of fossil fuels?
monomers, which make a chain called polymers which form different plastics.
What are thermoplastics?
Plastics that can be shaped/molded/remolded when heated, which ends up hardening (heat–>recycle–>new plastic)
What are thermosetting?
Non recyclable permanently set plastics.
What are two signs of degradation in plastics?
- crack
2. change in color
How to protect plastics from degradation?
- oxidation
- penetration of liquid (waterproof coating)
- ultraviolet rays
How do you create ceramics?
- Heated (metals+nonmetals)
- Let water evaporate
- bonds rearrange
- ceramics created!
