Food shortage
Problem:
-Wartime and post-war disrupted of production and shipping Rice producing countries were unable to produce enough to sell overseas
- War had destroyed many merchant ships so it could not be transported
Sunken ship blocked the harbour and few warehouses for storage
Solution:
- BMA (British Military Administration)
- BMA cleared the habour
- BMA controlled the prices of essential supplies(sugar, salt, fresh fish and vegetable)
- Provided free meals for children under 6 years old
Economic Difficulties
Problem:
- 7 september 1945 BMA declared that Banana note were no longer official currency and cannot be used to buy products. Had to use the straits dollar
Solution:
- BMA issued special granted to locals. Grants could be used to exchange for goods and service
-However, these grants were not sufficient for large families to make ends meet.
Schooling Disrupted
Problem:
- War disrupted schooling
Solution:
- BMA reopened schools quickly in oct 1945 to children of schooling age and overage children.
- Provided grants and waived school fees for needy families
- March 1946 saw 62 000 students enrolled in school

Conclusion
- With the British return, people expected lives to improve but this did not happen immediately
- BMA did act but the measures took time to take and effect. This led to unhappiness among the local population in Singapore.
