A) Weakening of colonial rule
A
- Even before wwII, anti-colonial sentiments had arisen in many places due to the suffering caused by european colonial rule.
- Anti-colonial sentiments accelerated due to:
- Defeat of europeans forces by an Asian power
- Japanese Occupation
- After the Japanese surrender, people in the colonies saw the chance to rise up against the europeans and take control of their own destinies.

A
- Communism opposed *exploitative colonial rule
-Hence, many people in Vietnam, Malay and Indonesia supported - Britain(USA’s ally during wwII) was concerned that its colonies( e.g. Malaya and Singapore) would fall under communist rule when fighting for independence.
- In Singapore, the Malayan Communist Party(MCP) gained popularity by helping resist the Japanese during JO
*making use of a situation or treating others unfairly in order to gain an advantage or benefit.
