What is the caste system
A system of divisions that separated Ancient Indian society into a hierarchy of priests, warriors, servants and untouchables.
Why did the Buddha’s message interest people from lower castes
The Buddha claimed that what caste you are did not matter to the Sangha. Anyone can join, and this interested people, especially the untouchables, who experienced daily suffering because nobody outside of their caste could associate with them. The Sangha allowed these people to talk to others and have a community
How was the Sangha formed
As the Buddha kept holding sermons, his messages spread to the interest of more people and eventually enough Buddhists joined to create the community known as the Sangha
Who are bhikkus and bhikkunis
Bhikkus are Buddhist monks and bhikkunis are Buddhist nuns. Both make up the Sangha
What are the Three Jewels
1) I take refuge in the Buddha
2) I take refuge in the Dharma
3) I take refuge in the Sangha
What are the Five Precepts
1) Do not take the life of another being
2) Do not take what is not given
3) Do not take part in sexual misconduct
4) Do not take drugs that cloud the mind
5) Do not speak falsely
