The Eightfold Path Flashcards
What is the Eightfold Path
A section of the Dharma. A collection of eight factors that can help a Buddhist achieve enlightenment
Explain two common misunderstandings about the Eightfold Path
The Eightfold Path is a guide to help Buddhists escape Samsara NOT a list of ways to please a god. There is no order to how the eight factors should be practised- each one should be carried out daily and they are all on the same level of importance
Explain the two factors of ‘Wisdom’
‘Right Understanding’ means to understand the Dharma and accept the Four Noble Truths. ‘Right Intention’ is the intention of letting go of negative desires/ temptations and not causing harm to others
Explain the three factors of ‘Morality’
‘Right Speech’ is to speak truthfully and compassionately without ever lying, gossiping or speaking unkindly. ‘Right Action’ is to never harm/ kill any living being, never behave unkindly, do not cause death, do not steal and don’t have immoral sexual relationships. ‘Right Livelihood’ is to earn money in an honest way that does not cause harm to others.
Explain the three factors of ‘Meditation’
‘Right effort’ is putting the right amount of effort into training your mind. ‘Right mindfulness’ is focusing your mind on the present moment. ‘Right concentration’ is practising meditation to train your mind.
