what is the relationship between cities and rural areas? Flashcards
context
compared to cities, rural areas have a lower population size and lower population density. Rural areas are also less built-up and has a lesser range of functions. When people move from rural areas to urban areas such as towns or cities, this is called rural-urban migration. Push factors refers to the the reasons as to why migrants want to leave their place of origin. While pull factors refers to the reasons as to why migrants are attracted to a destination such as a city.
provision of goods and services
Cities rely on rural area for much of their food supply since they have limited space for agricultural activities. Rural farmers can rear animals and grow crops for their own needs or sell them at markets from the cities. When this happens, they exchange their food products for money and thus becomes their source of income.
Rural inhabitants can also benefit from the amenities available in cities. They can travel to a hospital in the city o seek medical help and advanced treatment which may not be available in where they live. They can also buy certain goods from the malls in the city.
Push and pull factors
Examples of push factors are poverty, fewer job/employment opportunities( farming, fishing, forestry), effects of natural disaster
Examples of pull factors are more job/employment opportunities (more of a variety - hospitality, educational, commercial, manufacturing), better sanitation, better/more advanced medical care, more/better facilities and amenities.
