Large population size
Many people live and work in cities. Cities typically have a large population size compared to other areas in their country.The minimum population size to be considered a city in different countries differ. The minimum population size to be considered a city depends on different guidelines by different countries. For example a minimum population size of 1000 in one country may be considered a city and a minimum population size of 500 may be considered a city in another country.
High population density
Population density refers to the measurement of the number of people living in a unit area of land. Cities typically have high population density compared to the other areas in their country. Meaning that cities have a large population size living in a given area of land.

Built-up area
Cities are built-up areas. The land surface is mostly covered by buildings. Cities also have extensive infrastructure which is a system of buildings and equipment to provide basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation, telecommunications and transport to its residents.

Range of functions
Cities have a range of functions or activities such as administrative functions, commercial or educational activities. Jakarta, Indonesia plays an important administrative role in the country as it is where the president’s office and the highest court of law are located. Jakarta, Indonesia also plays an important economic role as it has many manufacturing industries that produce and sell a variety of products such as iron, paper and cars.
