What is the nervous system Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
-A network of cells in the human body, the body’s internal communication system
What is the function of the nervous system?
-to collect, process and respond to information from the environment
-to control organs and cells in the body
The nervous system is split into two main parts…
The central and the peripheral
What is the brain responsible for
-higher mental functioning
What is the spinal cord responsible for
-reflex actions and transmitting information to and from the brain
What two categories is the peripheral nervous system divided into?
The somatic and the autonomic nervous systems
What is the somatic nervous system responsible for?
-voluntary movements such as walking and transmits information from the brain to skeletal muscles
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for?
-involuntary functions such as breathing and digesting
What can the autonomic nervous system be divided into?
-the sympathetic (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic (conserves body energy) branches
