Fight or flight response Flashcards
Sally has potentially seen a piranha
-Stressor, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, sympathetic, adrenaline and adrenal medulla, parasympathetic
What two systems play a role in producing the fight or flight response?
The Autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system
What identifies the stressor?
The hypothalamus
What does the hypothalamus activate?
-the pituitary gland which triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the ANS
What is adrenaline released by?
-The adrenal medulla into the bloodstream
After the fight or flight is produced what does this prepare the body for?
-sudden physical action
What are the physiological reactions produced?
-increased heart rate , blood pressure and respiration
-reduced saliva production and digestion
The physiological reactions produced are immediate and
automatic
What does the parasympathetic branch do?
-This returns the body back to normal once the stressor has been removed
How does the parasympathetic branch help the body reach homeostasis
-it reduced heart rate and respiration
-increases digestion
