Dysfunctional thought processing Flashcards
RTS dysfunctional thought processing (central control) was conducted by?
-Stirling et al
Who was Stirling et als sample?
-30 patients with SZ and 18 non patient controls
What was the procedure of Stirling et al’s research?
-A range of cognitive tasks such as the Stroop Test where ppts had to accurately name the ink colour of the coloured word printed
What was the findings of Stirlings research?
-Schizophrenic patients took twice as long to complete the task as the control group.
How does Stirling’s findings support dysfunctional thought processing?
-Patients could not suppress their automatic response of saying the word rather than the colour
Alternative explanation for dysfunctional thought processing…
dopamine hypothesis - SZ is due to hyperdopamingerga where high levels of dopamine in central areas of the brain is associated with auditory hallucination rather than dysfunction in thought processing.
The cognitive explanation of SZ can be argued as having…
soft determinism
Why can the cognitive explanation of SZ be argued as having soft determinism?
Because whilst SZ is affected by internal factors of IMP we also have an element of control over our behaviour.
What can SZ’s choose to realise about their behaviour?
-that our thoughts are not determined by internal factors but external factors and this thinking is caused by metarepresentation
Why can the cog approach be seen as more appropriate in explaining SZ?
-it takes a more positive stance compared to the biological approach
