What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a major psychotic disorder that causes a variety of possible psychological symptoms. It is an extremely complex and debilitating disorder that costs £2 billion a year in Britain for treatments and care costs. It affects thought processes, but it is typified by a lack of contact with reality. There is currently no known cure
What is the age of onset for Schizophrenia?
Although it can emerge later in life, the age of onset for men is usually in the late teens or early twenties and for women, the onset is usually in the late twenties. It is most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35.
How many people in England and Wales have a diagnosis of Schizophrenia?
The Royal College Of Psychiatrists (2012) noted that approximately 220,000 people in England and Wales have a diagnosis of Schizophrenia in any one year.
This means that 1 in a 100 people will experience Schizophrenia in their lifetime (1%)
Does it affect men or women more?
It affects both men and women equally.
