What is the ICD-11?

A

In the UK, to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia, a person’s behaviours are assessed in relation to the criteria set out in the ICD-11 (THE INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATION Of DISEASES).
This is a manual used in Europe and it aims to clarify the symptoms of illnesses in order to enable medical professionals to diagnose patients.
The ICD is currently on its 11th edition (hence the number)

What is the DSM-5

A

This is the DIAGNOSTIC and STATISTICAL MANUAL of MENTAL DISORDERS. This is used in the USA, instead of the ICD-11. It is on its 5th edition

What are the similarities and differences between the ICD-11 and the DSM-5?

A
  1. There is a lot of overlap between the 2 systems
  2. It has many of the same illnesses and disorders described with similar or identical symptoms
  3. However, the DSM focuses exclusively on mental illnesses whereas the ICD has a wider scope and includes physical illnesses too
  4. When it comes to the diagnosis of Schizophrenia, there is a high level of agreement between the 2

What is the diagnostic criteria of the ICD-11?

A

There must be at least 2 symptoms present (one positive and one negative) most of the time for a period of 1 month or more.
