What is psychology Flashcards
What is psychology?
Psychology is the systematic, scientific study of behavior, and the mental process in
Context.
Defining Psychology
Psychology is a word deriving from the Greek root word Psyche. Psyche means Soul or Mind.
So Psychology is the study of the Soul or Mind.
Components of psych
there are four components: Behavior, Mental Process, Scientific
Study, and Context.
Behavior
is everything that we do that can be directly observed, in other words observable
behavior. E.g. A child laughing
Mental Process
are the hidden thoughts, feelings and motives that each of us experience
privately, but that cannot be observed directly. Because we cannot observe the process directly,
we often infer the mental processes that support observable behavior.
Science
in psychology uses systematic methods (e.g. observation and experimentation) to
describe, explain, and predict human behavior. For instance psychologist observe behavior in
natural and laboratory environments.
Context
are the historical, economic, social, and cultural factors that influences mental process
and behavior.
The Goals of Psychology
There are four main goals of psychology – Describe, Explain, Predict, Control
Describe
this means to describe how people think, feel, and act (behave) in certain situations.
Explain
This explain the causes of behavior – the how and why.
Predict
This looks at how an individual would behave in certain situations.
Control
How to control the individual’s behavior.
