What is Life? Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
Scientific discipline that investigates structure of body parts & how they relate to each other.
What are the levels of Anatomy?
- Gross Anatomy (Macroscopic)
- Surface
- Microscopic
- Development
What are the levels of Gross Anatomy?
a) Systemic
b) Regional
What is Gross Anatomy?
Structures examined without the aid of a microscope.
What is Systemic & Regional Anatomy?
S=Body is studied system by system.
R=Body is studied area by area.
What is Surface Anatomy?
Study of external form of the body & its relation to deeper surfaces.
What is Microscopic?
Structures examined with the aid of a microscope.
What is Development?
Structural changes that occur in the body throughout the lifespan.
What is Physiology?
Study of the function of living things.
What are the levels of Physiology in order?
Molecular Cellular Systemic Renal Neurophysiology Cardiovascular
What are the organisations of the human body?
- Chemical
- Cellular
- Tissue
- Organ
- Organ System
- Organism
What is Chemical Level?
Atoms (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen) combine to form molecules (DNA, RNA, sugar, water).
What is Cellular Level?
Molecules combine to form organelle of a cell.
What is Tissue Level?
Numerous cells (smooth muscle cells) join together to form a tissue.
What is Organ Level?
Tissues (can be more than one type) form organs (bladder).
What is Organ System Level?
One/more organs make up a system.
What are the characteristics of organisms?
- Organisation
- Metabolism
- Responsiveness
- Growth
- Development
- Reproduction
What is Organisation?
Relationships among the parts of an organism & how these parts interact to form specific functions.
What is Metabolism?
Chemical reactions taking place in an organism.
What is Responsiveness?
Organisms ability to sense changes in its environment & adjust to those changes.
What is Growth?
Increases size or number of cells.
What is Development?
Changes an organism undergoes through time.
What is Reproduction?
Formation of new cells or new organism.
What is Homeostasis?
The existence & maintenance of a relatively constant environment within the body.
