what Is Geography? Flashcards
what are the tools that geographers use?
geographers use many different types of tools in order to understand the earth and how people interact with the earth
what is geography?
it is the study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on earth surface
explain the difference between maps and globes
The two most important tools your first use our maps and globes. Maps are two dimensional representation of the earth surface and globes are three-dimensional representations of earths surface
what are specific tools geographers use?
GIS, fieldwork, satellite images, photographs, databases, primary sources, and diagrams
what does GIS stand for?
Geographic information system
what is GIS?
GAS combines information about a place from several sources such as databases maps and satellite images in order to solve a problem
what is fieldwork?
fieldwork is when a geographer travels to a location in order to study it. The geographer may interview people take pictures you surveying equipment or make personal observations
what are satellite images?
satellites are human made objects that orbit the earth and take pictures
what is the Landsat?
A series of satellites that orbit more than 100 miles above the earth
what does GOES stand for?
geostationary operational environment satellite
what are photographs used for?
geographers can take aerial photographs from airplanes in order to better understand an area
what are databases?
A database is a collection of information and a computer. The data can be anything from the different ethnic groups that live in an area to how much the average family earns in a year
what are primary sources?
geographers often rely on direct observation and studying the earth and patterns of human activity. Primary sources can be books articles interviews and pictures to name a few
globes are_
3-D representations of the earth
gloves are more accurate than_
maps
globes are not_
distorted
globes are not_
portable
globes do not show_
detail
globes are more expensive than_
maps
there are no_globes

maps can be put into a book called an_
Atlas
maps are_
portable
maps are distorted because_
The earth is not flat
maps can distort_ (4 examples)
shape area direction and distance
The distortion of maps is somewhat solved by different_
map projections
A way to draw maps in order to lessen distortion. There different types of projections because people use maps for different reasons. what is the definition of?
map projections
The Mercator projection is used by_
ship navigators
The polar projection is used by_
Airline pilots
The Robinson projection is used to_
compare data
what are the three ways you can identify a Mercator projection?
it is Square, latitude and longitude lines are at right angles, top and bottom are very distorted
what are the four ways you can identify the polar projection?
it is a circle, shows One hemisphere, latitude lines are circles, longitude lines radiate from the center
what are two ways to identify the Robinson projection?
curbside’s, longitude lines curve towards the north and south poles
what are the five different types of maps?
political, physical, topographic, thematic, cartograms
what do political map show?
boundaries
what do physical maps show?
elevation, deserts, bodies of water
political map show human made features such as_
City states provinces territories and countries
physical maps can help you see the type of_
landforms and bodies of water in a specific area
give examples of some thematic maps
qualitative maps, Cartographs, flowline maps, population distribution and density, economic activity, resource, language, ethnicity, climate, precipitation, vegetation
maps can be_
large or small scale
A small map can show a_
large area but without details
A small-scale map is used to see_
relative location and a region or between regions
A large-scale map shows a_
small area with a lot of detail
A large scale map is used to see_
relative location within a region
when did earths population reach 6 billion? 1901, 1965, 1988, or 1999
