What Is Food Security Flashcards
Definition of food security
UNFAO - food security exists when all people, at all times have physical and economic access to safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
What are the three pillars of food security
WFP - availability, access and utilisation
FAO - added a fourth which is stability
What does the physical availability of food mean
Addresses supply
Determined by the level of food production, stock levels and overall net trade
What does economic and physical access to food mean
Adequate supply of food at the national and international level does not guarantee household food security
Focus on incomes, expenditure and market prices in achieving food security
What is the food utilisation pillar
How the body makes use of the nutrients in food
Good care and feeding practices, food prep, diversity of diet and the intra- household distribution of food = sufficient energy and nutrient intake
What is the FAO stability
Stability of access, availability and utilisation overtime
Even if food intake is sufficient for one day, insecurity remains if access is inadequate on a periodic basis
Weather, political instability or economic downturns with unemployment and rising food prices impact food security status
How is food security linked to the MDG
MDG 1 - ‘eradicate extreme poverty and hunger ‘ and halve the number of chronically undernourished
Progress is uneven across regions and countries
Proportion of undernourished people in developing regions fell by 10.4% from 1991 to 2015
Fast progress = Latin America, east and southeast regions of Asia
Slow progress = Caribbean and southern and Eastern Africa ( did not reach the target)
