What is death? Flashcards
Death and life (2)
1) death and life are exclusive - cannot be dead and alive 2)life and death are not exhaustive - some things are neither dead or alive - stones
Biological conception of death (2)
1)living thing is system of many parts that cooperate to keep system going - a thing dies when it ceases to function biologically and cannot be restarted 2)only one sort of death that applies to all living things and that death is not psychological phenomenon
Problems with bcp
too vague - does not say about specifics of dying - cells and systems die at different rates
pcp of death (3)
all things we appreciate in life relies on conscious awareness - therefore a thing is alive when it has capacity for mental functioning and a thing dies whe it loses capacity for mental functioning 2) pvs is dead 3) negatives - trees don’t have mental death so therefore can’t die - life does not start at conception but 6 months in so foetus is not alive in same way as stone - person with psv isn’t buried til bio functions cease
Pluralism about death (2)
Way to get past pc objection - two kinds of death - bio and psy 2) critics - when speak of psy death of human and death of unconscious organism we speaking of different things but that doesn’t seem to be the case of the world died
Death as departure of the soul (2)
Immaterial thinking thing with mental properties - causes movement on body, being dies when soul loses capacity for two way interaction with body 2) disadvantages - doesn’t appear to have souls - thinking beings are immaterial entities and no biological organism can fell pain - damage to body would result in no problem as soul cannot be damaged -but this not case - mental actives are physical process in the brain
