Immortality Flashcards
Mortality (4)
Bad to die as deprives us of good things - good to never die? 2)weak imm - someone could live forever - strong imm - impossible for someone to die 3) weak morta - we are not going to live forever. strong mor - doomed to die 4) we have weak mor and strong imm - life at constant threat of all plans being destroyed
Would it be good to live forever? (2)
Evil of death deprives us of pleasure and positive experiences - if better that you are getting more pleasure than suffering good to continue living 2) but with youth which could be metaphysically possible
William’s dilemma (3)
1) Eternal life would eventually get boring - you’d get bored of interests 2) if interests changed youd be a different person and living multiple lives - want to continue living same life so if changed immortality would have no point 3)be grateful for mortality either way
Discussion to william (3)
1)not true would get bored of memory - short memory - forget what happened in books - so just as good reading original ones - be pointless from outside though? 2)have feeble intellect compared to archangel - does not imply life is pointless or absurd 3)bad thing to change? don’t have same character as we did when child - take into account our changing preferences we have when older - want tattoo later
What immortality would mean - procrast problem
If immortal have no urgency - would never start anything difficult as have eternity to do it 2)immortality would sap motivation and make us lazy 3)but immortality wouldn’t mean we have to work or get a job - so would start difficult projects
