What is causing the climate to change and are humans responsible? Flashcards

Q

What is the greenhouse effect?

A

The atmosphere changes the energy we receive from the sun and determines how warm the earth is. Energy is absorbed by gases and clouds, so less solar radiation is absorbed on the surface. Infrared Radiation emits 10% of this energy back to the atmosphere, a lot of the rest is absorbed by trace gases such as methane, co2, nitrous oxide and water vaporized. With the rest of the energy is absorbed through thermal and evaporating energy to balance the energy fluxes.

Q

What are the three ways to force the climate system to change?

A

1st, we can change the amount of energy that is entering the system by changing the amount of radiation that is coming from the sun ( naturally there is variation in earth’s orbit, so this can be done through that) ( changing amount of energy coming from the sun)
2nd is to alter the concentration of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to change the amount of infrared radiation that is absorbed and remitted by the atmosphere. ( anthropophase decrease emission of CO2, natural is the volcanic eruption can cause huge emission of aerosol, it cools the atmosphere) ( changing concentration of greenhouse gases and aerosol)
3rd is to alter the character of the surface of the earth to change how much of the incoming energy is reflected and how much energy is converted into heat ( changing surface properties) ( anthrop. land uses changes,
Can be natural or human causes.
