Demographic Transition Flashcards
What is the Demographic Transition model?
Based on historical population trends of two demographic characteristics ( birth rates and death rates) to suggest that a country total population growth rate cycles through stages as that country develops economically.
What are the characteristics of Stage 1?
- Low population growth rate due to high birth rate and death rate; birth and death rate are equal so that’s why low population growth
- High birth rates are associated with agriculture needs in the past
- This pattern could be because of infant mortality, social and economic factors
- No country is in stage one anymore.
What are the characteristics of stage two?
- Rapid decrease in death rates while birth rates remained high. So total population growth increases as birth rates outnumbered deaths
- This decrease could be due to improve in health care system, better education, gender equality and technological advantages.
- There are few countries that are still in Stage 2 such as Afghanistan, Guatemala and sub-saharn africa
What are the characteristics of stage 3?
Death rates are low and birth rates decrease, usually as a result of improved economic conditions, an increase in women’s status and education, and access to contraception. Total population growth will continue until birth rates are lowered to or below replacement level
This is a really good stage to be in
What are the characteristic of Stage 4?
Birth rates and death rates are both low, stabilizing total population growth. The decline in both birth and death rates of most Stage 4 countries have been attributed to strong economies, highly educated citizens, ample healthcare systems, the migration of people from rural communities to cities, and expanded employment opportunities for women.
What are characteristics of Stage 5?
A country experiences loss to the overall population as the death rate becomes higher than the birth rate. The negative population growth rate is not an immediate effect however.
Time that takes to double the population size?
The time it takes to double to population size is 70/(birth rate – death rate), which is 70/2 = 35 years.
Which of the following describes the five stages of the demographic transition model, in the correct order?
High stationary, Early expanding, Late expanding, Low stationary, Declining
