what is behaviour Flashcards

1
Q

sac-winged bat- saccopteryx bilinieata

A

-late afternoon they hang themselves upside down and clean their wings
-they go to their penis and there is a blob of yellow matter in which they mix that with saliva and transfer this to their wing cavity
-really smelly

Q

what were tinbergens 4 questions

A

1)how does behaviour develop (is it innate or learned
2)what mechanisms cause this behaviour (causal factors)
3) what is its current function (does it increase survival/reproduction)
4) why did the behaviour evolve like this

Q

what was tinbergens study with the gulls

Q

Karl von frisch study

A
  • he discovered the dance language of the bees
-in his experiment he would place two dishes, one far from the nest and one close, both with the same scent
-he placed the further dish first ad once the bee scouts had found them he ut the second dish out
-instead of the recruited bees going to the closer dish, they still went to the furthest dish, disregarding his odour theory
-he discovered that the speed of the dance of the bees increased the further away the food was, and the angle of the dance was the same as the angle the food was in regards to the sun

Q

Konrad Lorenz experiment

A

-he would let geese imprint on him and therefore he could study their behaviour
-behaviour portrayed as normal
-wanted to see the difference between innate or learned

Q

bats and their genital odour

A

-process takes places everyday as it consists of lots of time and energy
-once sacs are full, male bat will find the female bat and then he wafts his genital odour towards the female bat, the smellier the better as this means more chance of matting therefore their genes gets passed on
-depending on how good their odour is, the female can chose to mate with them or not

Q

what’s MHC

A

-major histocompatibility complex
-a set of genes concerned wit fighting disease
-high MHC protects against disease causing organisms
-you mate with someone who’s MHC compliments yours
