what impact did external developments have on singapores growth as a port city
the opening of the suez canal, the tin and rubber industries, the great depression
tell me more about the suez canal
the Suez Canal opened in 1969. it was a more direct and safe route to get to the straits settlement. it was much faster. therefore the prices of shipping were much lower and faster. it also increased the volume of ships passing thru the straits of Melaka, bringing Singapore more trade. this also increased the number of steamships being used as the Suez canal did not allow sailing ships. this forced the traders to stop at Singapore to replenish their necessities and stock up on coal. this helped to enhance Singapore’s role as a coaling station.
summarozed version of the suez canals benefits to singapore

tell me more about the rubber industries
the rubber industry took off because of the invention of the pneumatic tire which requires rubber. more people wanted rubber, so Malaya decided to tap the market and start to grow rubber trees. people flooded to Singapore to get rubber seeds. thanks to Malaya’s rubber planting, they went thru Singapore to entrepot trade. t
tell me more about the tin
the tin trade took off when people learned how to store food in tin cans. thanks to the British, there were peaceful conditions in Malaya where they were mining for tin. thanks to the supervision of the British, Malaya was the 4 largest producer in the world. a large part of the tin was brought to Singapore at the tin smelting factory. this processes brought large profits to those in Singapore.
tell me more about the great depression
the great depression happened due to a series of events.
1. the companies in the US made handsome profits
2. more people loaned money from the bank to bought shares
3.the companies were losing money
4. since the companies were losing money, more people were trying to share their shares
5. this caused the share prices to fall drastically
6. people who borrowed money from banks couldnt pay them back
7. when other people wanted to withdraw their life savings, the bank couldnt pay them back
8. these events lead to the bank having to close down and people losing their life savings
this is known as the wall street crash.
how did the great depression affect singapore
when the great depression happened, us companies could no longer afford to trade with other countries, such as Singapore. so singapore lost one of its biggest sources of income. tin and rubber prices both fell drastically. when singapore lost money, they could no longer afford to keep so many workers, so they laid off many workers and had to reject migrants
what did singapore do to improve the economic situation
singapore had to restrict and reduce the migrants coming into singapore, especially unskilled and uneducated chinese migrants. singapore did so by passing a series of laws. singapore arranged for unemployed chinese and indian workers to be sent home. for migrants that wanted to come to singspore, they had to obtain a landing permit which costs five dollars.
