some migrants, mostly europeans, were traders. most just kept to what they were last time. some europeans also opened agency houses. Street traders. monry lenders. labourers. craftsmen.
what are agency houses
they are companies that help to sell european manufacturers to sell their goods.
street traders, what are they
they are made up of many different types of street traders. there are those who sold quick and easy meals and those who sold things like sandals brooms and towels. there are also barbers and cobblers.
what are money lenders
moneylenders are mostly indians who are skilled in accounting , banking and credit. there was a very influential group called the chettiars, the helped to improve singapores commercial importance.
who are the labourers and what do they do
they are the coolies, samsui women and the convict labourers brought in by the british. the coolies did physical jobs, such as loading coal and goods onto ships. the samsui women, wore red head dresses, they also did physical labour such as balancing heavy pails of cement on their shoulders. convict labourers were brought in by the british to do tasks like clearing of forests and cint=structing roads.
who are the craftsmen
the craftsmen are mostly the bugis, who are skilled in buildings ships.
