What goes wrong with male reproduction system Flashcards
Cryptorchidism is
Failure of one or both testicles to descend
Remain in abdominal cavity or inguinal canal
The testis may produce hormones but usually no sperm
Hereditary in equine and swine
May be referred to as a ridgling or rig
Suspected hereditary in canine and feline
Testicular tumors are and can cause
Sertoli cell tumors produce estrogens
Changes in behaviour and ‘feminization’ of animal
Feminization – pendulous prepuce, mammary gland development and milk production. The penis and opposite testis will atrophy, and other male dogs may be attracted, as if he were a female in heat
Castration is
Castration in animals may be performed for any of the following reasons:
Prevention of reproduction
Control sexual behaviour and possibly aggression
Prevent testicular neoplasia or other testicular abnormalities (i.e.: testicular torsion)
Prevent or treat hormonal dependent diseases
Two types of canine castration and how to preform
Open castration
-The parietal tunic is incised, the vessels and vas deferens ligated, and the testicle removed
Closed castration
-Parietal tunic is left intact
-Spermatic cord is ligated by placing sutures around the outside of the parietal tunic.
-Testicles are removed within their tunics
What can go wrong with the prostate gland
Enlargement is common in older intact male animals
Can be benign prostatic hypertrophy
Can also develop prostatic tumors or abscesses, so should investigate
