How was Churchill influenced by his experience in WW1 ?
Had witnessed political leaders loose control of strategy and military commander like Haig persuing costly without supervision
He aimed to avoid this
How was Churchill unusual as a prime minister ?
He had war experience but was not distinguished
- young man seen in action in NW frontier of India, Cuba, Sudan and South Africa
- little experience of planning or strategy and no naval experience but gave orders in 1914
- Gallipoli campaign 1915 disastrous for the ANZACs and resulted in heavy losses and failure to go beyond the beaches
BUT it was out of date however this did not stop his confidence in giving orders
What did Churchill admire ?
‘Men of action’ like Bernard Law Montgomery and Harold Alexander
What did Churchill not admire ?
Perceived over cautious Generals which meant he was on bad terms with able men like General Auchinlrfk who’s preparations lead to victory at El Alamein
