    In his memoirs he wrote that in 1940 he gave direction ‘over the whole scene’
  • favored daring action and was frustrated by weakness or delay
  • often exhausted his staff and insisted on precise and concise paperwork with ideas presented on only ‘on sheet of paper’, often firing his demands in mass written instructions

  • personal flamboyance, often appeared in an array of costume and uniform such as the ‘siren suit’ and various army and naval uniforms emphasizing he was Britians war leader
  • he was at that time the most travelled prime minister with his travels being hazardous and uncomfortable for a man his age- it was remarkable
  • daring and ruthlessness marked him out, including determination to fight in 1940 including: decision to destroy French fleet in 1940 at Oran killing thousand of French preventing it falling into Nazi hands, impatience with delay and weakness in campaigns and support for covert operations
