What are the units of life ( small to large) lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the units of life from small to large?
atom, molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, prokaryote, eukaryote, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
What is an atom?
- it is the smallest unit of matter that consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons ( make molecules)
What is a molecule?
- it is a chemical structure with two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond ( formed to make macromolecule)
What is Macromolecule? provide example.
- Are large molecules formed by combining smaller molecule units
Example: DNA
What is an organelle? Provide example.
- is a group of molecules surrounded by membranes; small structures that exist in cells and perform specialized functions
Example: chloroplast
What is a cell?
- it is the smallest fundamental unit of structure and function in living organisms
What is the difference between prokaryote and eukaryote
Prokaryote is a single - celled organisms that lack organelles surrounded by a membrane and DO NOT HAVE A NUCLEI SURROUNDED BY NUCLEAR MEMBRANES
Eukaryote are organism that have BOTH MEMBRANDE BOUND ORGANELLES AND NUCLEI
What are tissues? Provide example
Is a group of similar cells that carry out the same function, they are found in most multicellular life
Example: muscle tissue
What are organs? Provide example.
Is a collection of tissues grouped together based on a common function
Example: stomach
What are organ systems? Provide example.
A higher level of organization consisting of functionally related organs
Example: digestive system
What is an organism? Provide example
It is an individual living entities
Example: blue whale
What is a population? Provide example.
All the individuals of a species (similar) living withing a defined area
Example: field of dandelions
What is Community? Provide example
the set of populations inhabiting a particular area
Example: all of the living thing including the dandelions in the field
What is an ecosystem? provide example
a community of living organisms together with the non- living parts of their environment
Example: a field, including, soil, minerals, sunlight, water and all life
What is a biosphere? provide example
include all ecosystem on earth. include land, water, the atmosphere and all life
Example: Earth
