Standards of behavior that are accepted by society
What are British Values?
The values associated with living in modern-day Britain

1 - Democracy
2 - The rule of law
3 - Individual liberty
4 - Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
5 - Participation in community life
What are values based upon?
culture, religious nature, history
How are values seen as universal?
examples of international law or treaties:
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights
- Human Rights Act 1998 (UK)
What is democracy?
a political system where the people have the power to decide
why is democracy important to British life?
1 - all citizens should be able to partake in democratic processes
2 - every voter’s vote is equal
3 - fair and open regular elections to public offices
what is ‘rule of law’?
1 - no individual or group is above the law
2 - right to be treated the same according to the offence committed
3 - includes police, royalty and all groups
what is ‘individual liberty’?
1 - freedom of speech
2 - free to make own choices and decisions
3 - consequences for actions deemed illegal by the state
4 - consequences are enforced by the legal system
what is tolerance?
people should show understanding to others with different viewpoints
what is a multicultural society?
a society made up of people from a range of cultural and religious backgrounds
what is equality
treating all people the same despite their differences
