How did cattle farming develop?

A

1866- railhead opened at Abilene Kansas and quarantine laws were relaxed. 1867- quarantine reimposed and entry for cattle limited to a few months during the winter. Number transported rose from 35,000 in 1867 to 700,000 in 1871.

A

Founded by Joseph smith who planned to form a city of god in Kirkland Ohio. Driven out after an economic collapse in 1837 and settled in commerce Illinois in 1838.

Describe the early days of the Mormons

A

When smith announced he was running for president and that god had told him that certain Mormons could practice polygamy, he was short dead. He was replaced by Young who took the Mormons to Utah in 1845.

A

What was manifest destiny?

A

First mentioned in the magazine democratic review in 1845, it was the idea that it was the god given destiny of the white Anglo Saxon race to rule the country from coast to coast, the retrograde culture of natives that stood in its way should be destroyed.

A

Groups like women and slaves moved west to avoid discrimination and sexism, seeing the west as a place of opportunity and freedom.
