Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands and Switzerland,

Roman conquered the Celtics (France) but never fully conquered the German.
What is the reformation
A period where Christians broke away from the Roman Catholic church and started protestant churches.
How did the reformation happen?
During the renaissance, religious movements happened. This caused people to doubt the government and even catholic churches. After Martin Luther King stated 95 statements that criticized catholic churches, reformation began.
Religions Today
France- mostly Catholics
Netherlands and Switzerland- half catholic half protestants.
Germany- Protestants North, Catholics south.
What are the middle ages
Period between Rome’s downfall and the renaissance where nation-states were formed
What is nation-state
An independent nation of people with common culture

Powerful people having all the lands.

People should be nation to their nations- people who they share history, land, and culture with.
Evolve from feudalism to nationalism
National Kings evolved more power than feudal lords, causing every nation to want it’s own country. Leading to nation-states.
The French revolution
French kings held absolute power and used it only for themselves. So the French rebelled and made France a republic.
Napolean Bonparte
He ceased power in France and made himself emperor. He got greedy and tried to take over Europe but got defeated.
Western Europe Nation-states relationships
After Napolean Europe’s nation-states started getting in wars often. It was always between France and Austria or France or Germany.
European Colonies
After the second wave of nationalism in the 1800s nation-states in western Europe experienced industrial growth. So they started having colonies in other countries to gain raw materials. The western Europe nation-states saw themselves as rivals.
World war 1
France against Germany, Austria, and other allied countries
World War 2
Germany got mad and started World War 2 led by Hitler and the Nazis who started the holocaust. Germany.
After Germany’s defeat
It was split into two parts:
1- West Germany was allied with non-communist Europe and the United states.
2- East Germany was allied with the communist soviet union.

Anti-communist reforms swept Europe, so eastern Europe opened the Berlin-wall and the two Germanies re joined to be a Democracy.
