Welding Flashcards
How much pressure is in an oxygen tank?
About 2200psi when full
How much pressure is in an acetylene tank?
About 330psi when full (stabilized by acetone)
What is the maximum working pressure of acetylene?
10psi
What is a Carburizing flame?
(Reducing) = excess fuel (“soft”)
When would you use an Oxidizing flame?
use in a corner if flame keeps going out
What is MIG shielding gas made up of?
Argon, helium, and carbon dioxide
What are some characteristics of a 6010 electrode?
DC excellent penetration, electron flow in all directions
In gas welding how can the weld pool be cooled?
adding more filler material or moving the torch away
How can you get the necessary amperage from the rod thickness in STICK welding?
Convert fractional dimension to thousands of an inch & multiply by 1000
What should shielding gas be set to when MIG welding?
Turn on shielding gas 20 to 30 Cubic Feet per Hour (CFH)
What are some characteristics of a 7014 electrode?
iron powder assists in starting arc. AC or DC
Reverse Polarity. Easy to use and versatile.
What are some characteristics of a 7018 electrode?
Has a very thick flux
What should the length of your arc be?
about the rod diameter
What is arc blow and how do you prevent it?
Occurs when the arc stream does not follow the shortest path between the electrode and the workpiece and is deflected
Arc blow = too much gap
Get closer to the work piece
What can happen if a tip becomes clogged when MIG welding and how do you clean it?
– causes wire to snarl at feed
mechanism
* Take to belt sander and remove steel deposit. Clean with tip cleaner
What does tungsten Inert Gas use?
a non-consumable electrode
(tungsten) which withstands a very high heat (just don’t dip it in the weld pool!)
What inert gas is usually used when TIG welding?
usually Argon (heavier than Helium, lower
consumption)
What amperage is used for TIG?
5 to 450 Amps
What are some characteristics of a RED tungsten electrode?
2% thoriated. Use for DC (Steel, Stainless)
What are some characteristics of an ORANGE tungsten electrode?
Ceriated. Use for general purpose
What are some characteristics of a GREEN tungsten electrode?
Pure. Use for AC (Aluminum)
How far out should you stick your tungsten electrode?
Stick tungsten out approximately 2X diameter (or stick
into a corner)
How is heat controlled in TIG?
Heat controlled by foot pedal. Increase in arc distance increases heat.
Should you use AC or DC for TIG welding Aluminum?
Use AC for aluminum
At what temperature does aluminum melt?
Aluminum melts around 700°C, but the oxide doesn’t break down until 2000°C.
Pieces to be welded must be _______, especially aluminum!
