Dividing Head Flashcards
PRACTICE THE CALCULATIONS
In week 12 on learning hub
What is a dividing head used for?
used to divide a circle (usually) into an
equal number of divisions
What are the 3 ways a dividing head can be set up?
with faceplate, dead center, or 3 jaw chuck
How many teeth does a worm wheel have?
40
_________ Indexing is done with the worm gear engaged.
_________ Indexing is done with the worm gear disengaged.
Simple Indexing is done with the worm gear engaged.
Direct Indexing is done with the worm gear disengaged.
_________ indexing plate usually contains _______ sets of hole circles or slots. Which are: _______________
Direct indexing plate usually contains three sets of hole
circles or slots: 24,30, and 36
Should you count the hole or slot in which the index pin is engaged?
NEVER count the hole or slot in which the index pin is engaged.
What is the gear reduction for simple indexing?
(40 teeth) means a 40:1 gear reduction (it takes 40 turns of the crank to get one full revolution of the output spindle)
What is the formula for simple indexing?
Indexing=40/N
N= Number of sides/holes
Example: To machine 8 sides of a blank, N = 8, so 40/8 = 5 turns of the crank to index the blank before each cut.
What can you use if the numbers don’t divide nicely for simple indexing?
Use an Index Plate and Sector Arms
_______ Indexing is the simplest form of indexing.
Direct
