Soldering Flashcards
Silver based solder is ________ solder
Lead based solder is ________ solder
Which is more expensive?
Silver based solder is hard solder
Lead based solder is soft solder
Hard solder is expensive
What materials can hard solder be used on?
most ferrous metals,
brass, copper and silver
Is a hard or soft solder stronger?
Hard
______ soldering requires a flam., ______ soldering requires a soldering iron
Hard soldering requires a flame, soft soldering requires a soldering iron
What form does hard solder come in?
Comes in coils of wire, or sheets (foil)
What additive us required when hard soldering?
Need to use flux. Consistency like toothpaste. Can be
revitalized with water if dried out
What may happen as the water in the flux boils off?
parts may move
What type of flame should you use when hard soldering?
Use a neutral or reducing flame (excess acetylene, flame rounded, not needle-like, not roaring)
What are the steps for hard soldering?
- Apply heat, let heat migrate to the joint
- Watch the flux. First it turns white as the water evaporates. When it turns clear you are very close
- Apply solder. Wait. It will ball up initially, then suck in (capiliiary action)
- Remove heat. Over heating causes oxydization.
- Do not quench.
- Remove excess flux (wash or pick off)
