What is mass?
the measurement of the matter that makes up an object
How do you measure mass?
digital balance
what is weight?
the force of gravity between two masses
how do you measure weight?
Newton meter, force meter, spring scale
Whta is gravity?
gravity is a pulling force downwards
what is a live load?
a live load is a force added to a structure, but can also be taken away (wind, people, collision) a bird landing on a tree branch)
what is a dead load?
Permanent force acting on a structure (weight of a structure upon itself)
what is an external force?
forces or stresses that act on the outside of a structure
what is an internal force?
forces of stresses within the material of which a structure is made
what are the four types of internal forces?
tension, compression, shear, torsion
what is tension?
pulling the ends apart
what is compression?
pushing the ends together
what is shear?
pressing the material in opposite dirrections
what is torsion?
twisting the material along a central axis
