what is a natural structure?
structure that is made by natural means ( not man-made)
What is a manufactured structure?
structure that takes materials and changes it to suit a purpose. (built by humans) (man-made)
What is a mass structure?
a structure that is solid all the way through
what is a frame structure?
a structure that has internal supports, but with empty spaces
what is a shell structure?
a structure that uses the outside walls for support to create large empty spaces
give one example for a mass, frame, and shell structure
mass: brick-walls, pyramid Frame: house, human body skeleton Shell: Taj Mahal, igloo
what is a function of a structure?
a function of a structure is the main purpose of a structure
what is load?
the force that the structure must support
what is design and aesthetics?
the purpose of the building can influence the design ( the looks and design of a structure)
what are mobile joints?
the junction of a structure that is able to move
What are rigid joints?
junction of a structure that is stuck in one place
what are fasteners?
material that is forced into the parts they join (usually has a hole that fits with the: nail, bolt, dowel)
what are ties?
material that is used to tie something together (string, shoelace)
what are interlocking shapes?
flexible material that is fitted together (folded seams of metal)
what are adhesives?
material held together by a sticky substance (fabric glue, glue)
