Biomedical model with disability

A
  • disability occurs due to physical impairments as a result of a disease or disorder
  • emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of the disease or disorder
  • disability is a problem of the individual and the solution is to “fix the individual”
    Unfavourable directions to consider are:
  • disability considered to be pathological
  • individual evaluated against a concept of “normality”
  • no consideration of the stigma or prejudice associated with labelling of an individual
  • treatment/intervention geared toward medical rehabilitation of the individual
  • social aspects of disability ignored and all individuals with the same diagnosis treated the same irrespective of their individual needs, resources or assets
32
Q

Social model with disability

A
  • disability a consequence of the environment & attitudes of society
  • loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in community activities on an equal level with others, due to physical or social barriers
  • sees individual primarily as a person & not a “disabled pers

Unfavourable directions to consider are:
A dismissive approach: ignores characteristics of the individual that might contribute to the disability

33
Q

Economic model with disability

A
  • disability defined by ability to participate in work
  • degree to which impairment affects individual’s productivity
  • economic consequences for individual, employer and ‘state’ – used by policy makers to assess allocation of funds to those who are unable to participate in full-time work
  • focus on adaptation of environment to allow the individual to perform the work function.

Unfavourable directions to consider are:
* only those individuals in the working age group
* that disabled employees are less productive in some circumstances, according to studies – the person with the disability may not always be placed in an appropriate work environment
altruistic motives of employers i.e. benefit through kudos, publicity, customer alignment and expansion by promoting themselves as an organisation which supports disability.
